How to install wood floor transition strips.
Installing transition strips is an often overlooked part of the installation of hard surface flooring.
Mark the floor where the transition strip is to be located taking care to allow for any required expansion space as specified by the flooring manufacturer.
If you are installing laminate or hardwood you will most likely need to put some transition strips down at some point.
In this video we show you how to transition between different floor heights from tile floor to wood floor installations.
Usually called seam binders these wide about 5 inches transition strips are flat strips of hardwood with beveled edges used to bridge two wood floors of equal heights.
Cut a wood shim to fill the gap between the bottom of the molding and the subfloor.
These can finish off the edge of a floor and make the job look much more professional.
Installing flush transitions with a floating floor â â â.
Step 2 apply a 1 4 inch wide line of construction adhesive to the bottom of the transition strip where it will rest on the concrete.
Place the transition strip in the expansion joint and press down firmly.
Position a scrap piece of the transition strip you re using on the floor next to each of the stops and cut out the bottoms of the stops flush with the top of the strip using a handsaw.
A seam binder is installed by simply positioning the strip over the seam then driving screws through pre dilled pilot holes in the strip to secure it to the subfloor in the gap between the floors.
Bond the shim to the subfloor and then bond the molding to shim.
Apply a 1 4 inch bead of flooring or construction adhesive along the center of the expansion joint.
